Biography
Until 1999 Graeme Dott, from Larkhall, Glasgow, was virtually unheard of outside his native Scotland.

Dott turned professional, aged just 17 in 1994 and made steady progress through the rankings. He broke into the top 64 in his third season, mainly thanks to a quarter-final placing in the 1996 Welsh Open, when he beat two of his higher ranked fellow Scots, John Higgins and Alan McManus, before bowing out to John Parrott.

He reached The Crucible stages of the 1997 World Championship, a few days before his twentieth birthday, putting up a tremendous battle before losing 10-9 to Thailand's James Wattana.

The waif-like Glaswegian broke into the top 32 for the 1998/99 season, but a slump in results led him to seek the advice of coaching guru Terry Griffiths. A 15-hour round trip from Scotland to Wales, punctuated by an intensive four hour session with Griffiths, led to a remarkable turn around in his fortunes.

On the back of his tactical lesson he returned to Scotland and reached the final of the 1999 Scottish Open, his first ranking event final. Although he suffered a 9-1 drubbing by Stephen Hendry, his performance rewarded him with his largest ever pay day, £32,000.

Not content with that he moved on to Plymouth for the British Open and punched in a 147 maximum break against David Roe.

Dott held his highest ranking placing at 25 at the start of the 1999/2000 season and consistent results saw him knocking on the door of the top 16. He had his chance in his own hands in the semi-final of the Scottish Open. Just one ball from victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan, he inexplicably missed a straightforward red with the rest and lost the match. A first round defeat at the hands of Steve Davis in the Embassy World Championship postponed his entry to the top 16.

Although he was consistent in winning his opening matches in tournaments last season, Dott failed to overcome the tougher opposition in the latter rounds in most events. He did, however, benefit from John Higgins's withdrawal from the Grand Prix and went on to reach the semi-final, and also reached the last 32 of the world championship, taking him at last into the top 16.
