Biography
Hong Kong's Marco Fu is rewriting the snooker record books in record quick time. Last season, Fu became the first player ever to record a 147 maximum break in the Regal Masters. The total clearance, which took just over eleven minutes to complete, was Fu's first competitive maximum and the first shown live on the world wide web.

A phenomenal sprint up the world rankings in his short career saw Fu break into the top 16 after just two full seasons, having jumped from 377 to 35 in his first full season.

Fu was inadvertently launched on his snooker career by relatives when he was just four years old. He reckons the table he was given as a gift is the best present he's ever had.

Marco's snooker development has been carefully watched over by his father, who accompanies him around the circuit, helping to keep him in touch with family and friends from home and providing support and company. He has set up a UK base at Stirling and practises at the same club as Stephen Hendry.

Fu's snooker fairytale began at the IBSF World Under-21 Championships in Ireland in 1997. He emerged from the field of promising young players to win the event, compiling six century breaks during the tournament. Fu went on, later in the year to lift the world amateur crown, beating defending champion Stuart Bingham in the final. It was an amazing recovery to win 11-10, as at one stage Fu trailed Bingham 7-1.

With barely time to draw breath he flew to the UK to play as an amateur in the 1998 Embassy World Championship. Having romped through the amateur qualifiers, he took up his professional status and won a total of nine matches before tiredness eventually took its toll.

Fu's first full season was 1998 and he immediately hit the headlines, reaching the final of the Grand Prix.

Four wins took him through to a first Crucible appearance and a dream match against Far East rival James Wattana. The Thai edged a thrilling match 10-8, but Fu had gained more valuable ranking points.

The following season, semi-final appearances in the Regal Scottish and Rothmans Malta Grand Prix - as well as a return visit to The Crucible - helped him into the top 16.

Last season, however, proved more difficult and Fu failed to make it past the last 16 of any ranking event. His season finished with disappointment as he lost out in the first round of the world championship and lost his place in the top 16. But few believe that he will remain outside the elite for long.

Marco's sporting hero is Michael Jordan, the legendary basketball player. "He can do things other players only dream about, and I admire his professional attitude." He became a basketball fan while studying in Canada, where he also developed his snooker skills.

Marco also enjoys football and since staying in Britain has adopted Manchester United as his favourite team.
