The talented left-hander, with perhaps the most unusual stance in snooker, will be delighted to return to the elite - not least since it will give him the chance to play for his home crowd at Wembley once again. A run to the final of the 1997 Regal Welsh helped to lift him towards the top 16 and reaching the semis again in 1998 sealed his position. King gained himself an unenviable record at the hands of John Higgins in the 1997 Grand Prix, when, in losing 5-0, he amassed just 11 points in the entire match. The 1999/2000 season provided lean pickings, with just a quarter-final appearance in the Thailand Masters to show for his efforts, although King recorded his third victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan in the last 16. But that performance wasn't enough for him to keep his top 16 ranking and with hot competition for places, King was one of the three to drop out. King's best showing last season came in the first ranking event, the British Open, when he beat Mark Williams on his way to the quarter-finals, but with the ranking list takeing two seasons' results into account, King made it back into the top 16. Win or lose, however, King is a natural entertainer and one of the circuit's characters, adored by a vociferous army of London supporters. He is guaranteed to sport a natty line in waistcoats and is rarely without a broad grin. Away from snooker Mark's family is his pride and joy, and he keeps himself fit by playing Sunday League football with Gidea Park Rangers. |
