Biography
Among the youngest players in the top 16, Matthew Stevens is well established as one of the top names in the game - although, extraordinarily, he has not yet won a ranking title.

The 1999/2000 season saw him claim his first silverware, at two lucrative invitation events. The Regal Masters became his first major tournament win, while later in the season he claimed the B&H Masters. His highlights in ranking events included a second final in the Liverpool Victoria UK Championship and a first appearance in the final of the Embassy World Championship, after which he treated himself to a new Ferrari.

A native of Carmarthen, Stevens is a fluent Welsh speaker and the dragons that adorn his shirt cuffs, mark him out as a proud Welshman.

Stevens climbed to No.6 on the world ranking list a year ago. He plays his snooker at the Terry Griffiths Matchroom and the 1979 World Champion has monitored his progress carefully since Matthew was a young promising Welsh junior.

His first professional title was the 1995 B&H Championship, which earned him a wild card to the B&H Masters in 1996, where he beat his mentor Griffiths, before losing to Alan McManus. Back again by right in 2000, he stormed his way through the quality field, before beating Ken Doherty in a top-class final. Meanwhile, Stevens has also developed an interest in golf.

Last season proved more difficult, and Stevens did not make it beyond the quarter-finals of a ranking event until the world championship. He also struggled in invitation events. But the world championship saw a different Matthew Stevens as he powered his way to the semi-finals with huge wins over Tony Drago, Anthony Hamilton and Stephen Hendry. He battled hard against John Higgins before losing their titanic last four clash 17-15.

Away from the table, Stevens has had to deal with the sudden death of his father who had been a constant companion throughout his snooker career. Morrell's death in February was a loss not just to Matthew, but to the whole snooker community.
