Biography
Unlike many of the ankle-biters of the modern game, Nigel Bond was 15 before he played first on a full-size table. He won the English Amateur Championship in 1989 and turned professional at the age of 24.

Success followed quickly, as he reached the semi-finals of the International Open in his first season and went on to get to his first final, the Grand Prix in 1990. There he led Stephen Hendry 5-3 after the first session, but couldn't sustain the performance as he lost out 10-5.

Titles were fairly elusive, but Bond won the Kings Cup in 1993 and continued to produce consistent results, which were reflected in his ranking. Bond gained a top 32 place in 1991 and has remained there ever since, peaking at number five in 1996.

His best sustained performance came in the Embassy World Championship in 1995, when he reached the final only to run into Stephen Hendry, who also defeated him when he reached the semi-finals at the Crucible in 1996.

Bond took his first ranking title at the British Open in 1996. Needing snookers in the deciding frame of the final against John Higgins, Bond tenaciously clawed back to win the decider for his first world ranking title.

Bond's 1997 Regal Masters final win over Alan McManus was another great snooker houdini act. Bond trailed 8-6 and was 61-0 behind in the next. Somehow he produced a 67 clearance and then took the last two frames to win the title.

The Derbyshire man's credentials as an escape artist were established during a memorable match against Cliff Thorburn in the 1994 World Championship. He trailed 9-2, before he fighting back to 9-7 when the match was pulled off. Going back on after the evening session, he completed his come back at 2.00am winning the match 10-9.

Bond's form has slipped somewhat in recent seasons and he lost his top 16 place, but 1999/2000 saw a minor revival. A solid 10-5 win over Euan Henderson took him back to the Crucible, where he lost to Alan McManus in the last 32.

Last season, the highlight for Bond was an appearance in the last 16 of the China Open. However, his consistent form was enough to see him stay safely within the top 32, and he also earned a trip back to The Crucible.

Outside snooker Nigel is a big Manchester City fan. He is married to Caron and they have two children.
