It wasn't long before he was satisfying his former employers with a healthy return on the investment as in his debut professional season he reached the last 16 of the Embassy World Championship, banking a cheque for £12,000. In a six-match winning spree, he included victories over former champion Cliff Thorburn, and the 1981 finalist Doug Mountjoy in his first Crucible appearance; including a debut century for good measure. Steady progress through the myriad qualifying rounds, highlighted by a semi-final appearance in the 1995 Welsh Open, gained him a top 64 ranking in 1995. He jumped to No.30 for the 1996 season and by 1999/2000 had risen to his best placing at No.18. A disappointing season, highlighted only by a last 16 placing in the Grand Prix and the last 32 of the Embassy World Championship meant that Small slipped three places to 21 when the official ranking list was updated in May 2000. Last season saw a similar decline, with Small not advancing beyond the last 32 of any event until the world championship. There he beat Marco Fu before losing out 13-8 to fellow Scot John Higgins in the second round. |
