1997 - British Open - quarter-finalist

Biography
Michael Judge won the hearts of snooker fans in the Republic of Ireland by beating Northern Ireland's Joe Swail on the last black of their 1999 Nations Cup match.

That win helped to earn Judge a sponsor's wild card to the 1999 Irish Masters. Although he could not overcome Peter Ebdon in his opening match, Judge acquitted himself well, recording a total clearance in the intimidating atmosphere of the arena at Goffs. The Dubliner was watched eagerly by his uncle, Francisco, who taught him how to play. Michael's brothers and sister are also keen on the game.

Judge's best result in a ranking event came in the 1997 British Open when he beat compatriot Ken Doherty, just weeks before the Ranelagh man won the world championship, on his way to the quarter-finals.

Judge was again part of the Republic of Ireland Nations Cup team this season, and along with Ken Doherty and Fergal O'Brien, reached the final.

After several disappointing near-misses, Judge qualified for the last 32 of the world championship this season, and earned his first appearance at The Crucible Theatre. He could scarcely have had a more difficult route - beating six-times runner-up Jimmy White in his last qualifying match. At The Crucible, Judge beat John Parrott before succumbing to Ken Doherty.

However, his exceptional efforts throughout the season saw him take a massive leap up the rankings and into the top 32 for the first time.
